The two of them are thrown together by seeming coincidence and, as they follow the trail of Xue Xian's missing dragon bones, uncover a plot that irrevocably ties them together. What more can I say? This novel is awesome. There's fantasy, mystery, plenty of action and a glorious slow-burn romance as this OP couple bicker and banter their way into being life-long companions.
Can Ci Pin
残次品Two words: Space gays! Stoic, aloof and super OP Commander Lin Jingheng x genius engineer and smooth-talking puppy-in-love Lu Bixing was the Priest couple that I didn't know I needed - one moment I was losing my mind over how adorable they are while falling in love, and next moment I was being stabbed in the heart by the depth of their love and devotion. Before this I could've sworn I'm not a fan of sci-fi, but now I'd happily read another 200 chapters of LuLin traversing timespace in mecha and Jingheng beating up space pirates.
Fake Slackers
伪装学渣Cold, badass Xie Yu who prefers to speak with his fists making friends with an equally badass but also hilariously shameless He Zhao - and they become inseparable friends & lovers while pretending to be slackers at school? AMAZING. Just watching He Zhao doting on Xie Yu and falling head over heels and Xie Yu returning his affections just as straightforwardly was a delight - it's basically comfort food in the form of bickering lovey-doveyness; they're so unabashed with their mutual affection. No angst or silly misunderstandings, and, despite minor bumps in the road as they grow up, they find themselves surrounded by a lifelong group of school friends too. This is high school coming-of-age romcom at its best, filled with the warmth, passion, joys and awkwardness of youths on the cusp of adulthood. Almost makes me miss high school.
Qiang Jin Jiu
将进酒If there was a poll for Top 10 coolest danmei male leads, Xiao Chiye would definitely be in the top five at least. The man is literally the human embodiment of a fierce, strong alpha wolf, and the wily fox Shen Zechuan is every bit his match. Together, Cezhou are famous for being one of the spiciest CPs in historical danmei (and they deserve this reputation, hot damn), but that's not all they are either. They go from being enemies to lovers with the kind of burning desire and passionate deep love that fairly sizzles off the page, and it's one heck of a ride as they scheme and outmaneuver their opponents until they conquer Da Zhou, the wild grasslands of Libei and beyond. Do you need your brain switched on when you read through all this political intrigue? Sure. But is it worth it? YES.
Golden Stage
黄金台This has one of my absolute favourite couples and is overall just a beautiful story. Fu Shen (a legendary general who suffered a career-ending injury) and Yan Xiaohan (a ruthless court official) are forced into an arranged marriage due to murky politics, despite their apparent frenemies status. That's all for the best, though, because Fu Shen and Yan Xiaohan are actual relationship goals. Mutually supportive and communicative, super affectionate and has a surprisingly touching love story that began long before most people (including Fu Shen himself) even realized it? So good.
The Earth is Online
地球上線This is probably many people's gateway drug for survival game/thriller danmei novels, and I have yet to find another that's quite as good as this. Like in MDZS, we have an awesome power couple here in Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo - there's nothing more exciting than seeing them team up to out-think and out-gun their opponents in order to survive and defeat the system. (These guys are smart.) Their romance is subtle and slow-burn, but I love their dynamic. Coupled with the ingenious plot and the top notch mysteries and puzzles, you can say goodbye to your sleep schedule - there's no putting this down.
Evil As Humans
凶人恶煞The best accomplices and the most OP monster duo! Mysterious 1,000-year-old evil spirit(?) Yin Ren wakes up from deep slumber and all he wants to do is to be a well-fed salted fish - next minute he's recruited into a supernatural organisation and partnered with the equally-mysterious human(?) Zhong Chengshuo. They get up to hilarious shenanigans, going from investigating cases to investigating each other and themselves and it's genuinely a wild ride. This is peak urban fantasy meets mystery meets romance, featuring one of the sweetest and most unusual couples you'll come across. Apple x Rabbit, iykyk.
Thrive in Catastrophe
绝处逢生Zombie apocalypse! I am super fond of this one and wish it wasn't so underrated - it has an amazing couple that is the very definition of romantic (and steamy) tension, an incredible growth arc for our genius scientist MC (Xiao Yan) and a ridiculously attractive, cold and brooding ML (Heine Burton) who would do anything to keep him safe. Did I mention he's also a super soldier? They start off as Protector and Protected, but over the course of the story Xiao Yan grows (with support from Heine) into someone who can fight beside him on equal footing. This is all set in a dangerous and often-brutal (but strangely beautiful) post-apocalyptic world and has action in spades.
Don't You Like Me
你是不是喜欢我Absolutely the most adorable 98 chapters of heart-thumping romance, comedy and fluff that I have ever read. It's criminally underrated! Lin Feiran's ghost-seeing predicament (only temporarily alleviated by touching Gu Kaifeng and absorbing his yang energy) makes for hilarious reading and plenty of cute moments, and they become such a sweet, wholesome and sticky couple that it'll give you cavities. The ghosts are more than just a gimmick as well - they have their own surprisingly touching stories. This novel left me feeling warm, happy and with a silly smile on my face over the LinGu couple and I can't recommend it enough.
Lovely Allergen
可爱过敏原Came for the fluff, but got one of the most heartwarming stories of deep, unconditional love that I've ever had the pleasure of reading. On the surface it seems to be ye olde adopted brothers trope (with an iceberg ML and an innocent, adorable puppy MC), but it's far more than that - it's a lovely journey with Yue Zhishi and Song Yu growing up together, falling in love and becoming each other's whole world and safe harbour before they even realize it. Bonus: No silly separation angst, no horrible disapproving parents or random knives. Worth reading just for Song Yu (Gege!!) alone - truly one of the most silently caring, devoted and affectionate MLs ever.
Married Thrice to Salted Fish
三嫁咸鱼What do you get when you pair up a transmigrated teenager (whose sole wish in life is to be a salted fish) and a cold beauty (who's a master of poisons and genius doctor)? A perfectly matched couple who's lovey-dovey together but scheming murder husbands when provoked, that's what. This novel is the perfect blend of slowburn romance and humour; Lin Qingyu and his salted fish husband go from being reluctantly married the first time to newlyweds falling in love the second time and finally to lovers with an unbreakable bond when united in marriage for a third time. They go through a great deal to be together (and boy does Bikabi write heartwrenching grief and loss like no other), but it's all worth it in the end.
The Human Cub's Guide to Wasteland Survival
人类幼崽废土苟活攻略Who doesn't love a good zombie apocalypse danmei novel? This is one of the best out there. Not a single boring moment (but plenty of heart-stopping ones) as it follows Feng Chen and Yan Bubu from the beginning of their survival journey as kids - trapped in the midst of an earthquake and tsunami, fending off zombie attacks, making it through a heatwave and then an ice age - all the way to adulthood when they become even more inseparable as bonded sentinel-guide and work together to help humankind survive to see a better tomorrow.
